What is Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal procedure is done to help save a tooth from severe infection or decay. During the process, the tooth’s nerve and pulp are removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned.

Why do I need a Root Canal?

If the tooth nerve and pulp are damaged or infected due to decay, they begin to break down. Bacteria and debris may result in the formation of an abscess. An abscess is the formation of pus, and if left untreated, it can cause swelling, pain in the head, neck, and cheek as well as bone loss near the tip of the tooth roots.

How do I know I need a Root Canal Treatment?

Some symptoms when a root canal is needed include:

Spontaneous pain or throbbing while chewing
Sensitivity while eating hot and cold food
Severe decay or an injury that creates an infection in the bone
Change in color/Darkening of the tooth
Fracture of the tooth due to trauma
Swelling seen in the areas of gums around the tooth

Are Root Canals painful?

The entire procedure is performed under anesthesia to make sure the patient has no discomfort during the root canal treatment.

What should I do after my Root Canal?

After the root canal, you will need to cap your tooth to prevent it from breaking. Ask your dentist when to cap your tooth post your root canal treatment.

What is done during a Root Canal procedure?

The dentist verifies that the tooth is infected by means of clinical tests and an X-ray. A local anaesthetic is given to numb the tooth and the entire nerve tissue is removed. The inside of the canal is shaped and sterilised to prevent new bacterial growth. The procedure takes 1-3 sessions. An inert material, the most common being gutta percha, a natural product, is used to hermetically seal the empty canal because it does not allow bacteria to grow.

Typically a single sitting root canal takes 45-60 mins. It may also be done over 2 sittings, depending on the tooth.

What are the different options for crowns after my Root Canal Treatment?

Based on the material used, crowns can be of the following types:

Full Metal Crowns – These are made entirely of Stainless steel. They are mostly used after root canal treatment in the case of baby teeth (puplpectomy)
Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns (PFM) – These crowns are tooth coloured on the outside, fabricated over a metal base.
Zirconia/E-Max Crowns – These are highly aesthetic crowns used mainly in the restoration of anterior teeth. They are completely tooth coloured with no metal base.
